みやび流押絵 (Oshie Miyabi)
December 20th, 2011 § Leave a Comment
I went to my first Oshie lesson earlier in the month at the Oshie Miyabi School run by Mr Soho Konishi.
Oshie is an old Japanese craft which is kind of like collage made from Kimono fabric.
Konishi-San and his mother and all of the students were very welcoming. This photo shows the finished product. It’s an image of two Japanese fans. Konishi-San did the prep work on it for me so it was not so difficult to complete.
You can read further about Oshie on the Oshie Miyabi School homepage:
I hope to use the craft of Oshie to create a stop motion film using Kimono fabric.

stopmotion test

A stopmotion video made of little pieces of cut up wood.
Screened at a.s.e gallery in Osaka
http://twitter.com/#!/ase_gallery
These two short videos were made by myself and Guy in the past few weeks.
We’ve been thinking a lot about stop motion recently inspired by eastern European animators such as Jan Svankmajerand Karel Zemon.
For the first video Guy made all these wooden shapes with his trusty band-saw then passed them over to me for some stopmotion trickery. It was fun playing around with the pieces he gave me.
The second video uses more paper-craft in addition to whatever stuff was at hand in the room. It’s kind of rough but serves as a test run for later projects.
Later we would like to incorporate animation with tactile sculpture in a live setting.

I made this video last summer when my friend Guy gave me some of his stone sculptures to mess around with.
寺BOT

寺BOT is a creative group consisting of sculptor Guy Hirose, music producer T2R and animator, me, Rowan.
We got together this summer and have just been knocking ideas around so far.
Hopefully we’ll be starting a full project together this month.
寺 is the Japanese word for temple, pronounced ‘Terra’, so the name should be read as TerraBot. You could say 寺Bot is a combination of creative tradition and modernity if that’s the kind of thing you like thinking about.
The video below came from me and Guy just messing around in his studio/house. The music is by T2R.
The next video has some of Guy’s old sculptures in it plus more T2R music.
You can hear more of T2R’s music here http://www.myspace.com/tech2rockers
I’ll post some more 寺Bot stuff here later.

I made this quick video in my room this afternoon because I was too tired to go out and do anything today after another night drinking chu hi’s.
